Marriage in Indonesia can only take place between a man and a woman.
Foreigners may marry in Indonesia. After entering Indonesia, all legal paperwork must be completed at the Consulate(s) of the couple for the marriage to be legal. There are companies that take care of administrative details and organise the wedding.
Marriage between an Indonesian citizen and a foreigner can be complicated because laws are applied unevenly across Indonesia and regions have different legal procedures. In urban areas such as Bali and Jakarta where many marriages involving foreigners take place, local officials generally uphold marriage law. In areas where fewer such marriages take place, foreigners should find out about local practices and contact local marriage authorities. It is strongly suggested that foreigners consult the Indonesian Embassy in their home country, or their consulate in Indonesia as early in the process as possible.
It is least complicated to get married in the residential area listed on the Indonesian partner's National Identification Card (Kartu Tanda Penduduk or KTP).
Before marrying, foreigners must meet the following requirements:
The foreigner may also need an Indonesian Police Certificate stating that they have never committed a crime.
